Historique
Le château était le siège d'une des quatre baronnies du Périgord. Le troubadour Arnault de Mareuil, qui écrivit les « Saluts d'amour » de 1170 et 1200, est né dans ce château. L'édifice, en partie ruiné, est protégé par des fossés en eau. Sa forme est irrégulière. Il a été rebâti à la fin du 15e siècle, sur d'anciennes fondations. Le plan est triangulaire, flanqué de tours aux angles. Deux tours rondes encadrent l'entrée, constituée par une porte en anse de panier, donnant accès à la cour intérieure. Près de l'entrée se trouve la chapelle. En face de la porte d'entrée, dans l'angle opposé de la cour, s'élève le donjon carré qui renferme un escalier monumental. Les intérieurs sont généralement lambrissés et ornés de grandes cheminées de bois dans le goût du 17e siècle.

History
The castle was the seat of one of the four baronies of Périgord. The troubadour Arnault de Mareuil, who wrote the 'Saluts d'amour' between 1170 and 1200, was born in this castle. The building, partly ruined, is protected by water-filled moats. Its form is irregular. It was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, on old foundations. The plan is triangular, flanked by towers at the angles. Two round towers frame the entrance, consisting of a basket-handle arch door, giving access to the interior courtyard. Near the entrance is the chapel. Opposite the entrance door, in the opposite angle of the courtyard, rises the square keep which contains a monumental staircase. The interiors are generally wainscoted and adorned with large wooden fireplaces in the taste of the 17th century.
