Emmanuel Philibert, accédant au trône de Savoie en 1553, fait fortifier le bassin de la Darse où s'installe une escadre de galères. Bâtiment des galères construit en 1769. Après la Révolution, le bagne est supprimé ; les galères sont remplacées par des bâtiments à voiles, puis des bâteaux à vapeur. Au 19e siècle, la Russie obtient l'usufruit du bâtiment des galères et installe une station de zoologie. Depuis 1931, la station est rattachée à l'université de Paris. History
Emmanuel Philibert, acceding to the throne of Savoy in 1553, has the basin of the Darse fortified where a squadron of galleys is established. Galley building constructed in 1769.
