The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Lohrmann.

Kasarmialueen perustamisen ajalta on säilynyt kaksi tiilistä miehistökasarmia ja sairastupa. Päävartiorakennus ja leipomorakennus ovat 1860-luvulta. Päällystön puiset asuinrakennukset ovat 1880-luvulta. 1910-luvun kasarmit edustavat punatiilistä tyyppikasarmiarkkitehtuuria samoin kuin esimerkiksi Dragsvikin kasarmissa Tammisaaressa ja Hennalassa Lahdessa.

Pohjoisosan puistomaisella alueella sijaitsee alueen vanhin rakennus, osaksi kaksikerroksinen puutalo, joka 1830-luvulla rakennettiin alueella toimineen kruununapteekin henkilökunnan asunnoiksi.

Linnan kasarmit on osa Vanajaveden laakso ja Aulanko -nimistä valtakunnallisesti arvokasta maisema-aluetta.

Hämeen linnaa ryhdyttiin rakentamaan 1200-luvulla Linnanniemeen. Asutusta syntyi linnan pohjoispuolelle 1600-luvun alkuun mennessä. Kaupungin perusti Pietari Brahe 1639. Tuhoisan 1739 tapahtuneen tulipalon jälkeen kaupuki päätettiin siirtää pois linnan tuntumasta. Lopullinen sijoituspaikka ratkesi 1777 ja seuraavalla vuosikymmenellä kaupunki rakennettiin nykyiselle paikalle. Autioitunut kaupungin paikka jäi kruunun hallintaan.

Ensimmäiset tiilirakennukset päätettiin rakentaa 1840-luvun alkupuolella alueen eteläosaan venäläistä 7. Linjapataljoonaa varten. Vähän aikaisemmin linnan rakennuskompleksia oli päätetty kehittää yksinomaan vankilakäyttöön. Intendentti E.B. Lohrmannin suunnitelmat uutta kasarmia varten valmistuivat 1845. Vaikka alkuperäistä rakennusohjelmaa kustannussyistä supistettiinkin, Lohrmannin suunnitelma ja siitä 1848-1851 toteutetut osat muodostivat lähtökohdan alueen myöhemmälle lisärakentamiselle.

Kasarmien rakentaminen jatkui 1870- ja 1910-luvulla noudattaen Lohrmannin kehittelemää perusratkaisua länteen antavine kasarmin pääsivustoineen, keskuspihoineen ja rantaan laskevine takapihoineen sekä pihoja erottavine talousrakennusten rivistöineen. 1800-luvun jälkipuoliskolla varikkotoiminnot siirtyivät pois alueen pohjoisosasta, josta kehittyi puistomainen, pääasiassa puurakennuksia käsittävä sotilasasuntoalue.

Varuskunnan jälkeen tiloissa toimi mm. tykistömuseo. Alue tullaan muuttamaan asuin- ja toimistokäyttöön.

The Linna Barracks in Hämeenlinna are an exceptionally multi-faceted barracks area of the 19th and early 20th centuries from the viewpoint of building history. They lie next to Hämeen linna, on the old site of the town, and reflect Hämeenlinna's importance as a military centre.

The Linna barracks area is bounded to the south by the medieval Hämeen linna with its outer fortifications and prison buildings, to the west by Tampereen tie, to the east by Vanajavesi and to the north by Kaupunginpuisto. The northern part of the area was already a depot area for Russian troops in the early 19th century and the site of the Crown pharmacy laboratories and staff housing, among other things. At that time the southern part of the area, next to the castle, was undeveloped. This duality is still visible in the contrast between the park-like northern part of the Linna barracks and the bare southern part.

The Linna barracks area is part of an important historical cultural landscape, both functionally and visually. At the same time it is one of the most significant historical barracks areas in Finland, built up between the 1850s and 1910s. The barracks of the 1850s represent exceptional military building and architecture, rarely found outside Helsinki, designed by architect E.B. Lohrmann in the Intendant's Office.

From the founding period of the barracks area, two brick barracks for other ranks and the infirmary have survived. The main guardhouse and bakehouse are from the 1860s. The wooden residential buildings for officers are from the 1880s. The barracks of the 1910s represent typical red-brick barracks architecture, as do, for example, the Dragsvik barracks in Tammisaari and Hennala in Lahti.

In the park-like northern area stands the oldest building in the area, a partly two-storey wooden house, which was built in the 1830s as housing for staff of the Crown pharmacy that operated in the area.

The Linna barracks are part of the nationally valuable landscape area called Vanajaveden laakso ja Aulanko.

Construction of Hämeen linna began in the 13th century on Linnanniemi. A settlement grew north of the castle by the early 17th century. The town was founded by Pietari Brahe in 1639. After the disastrous fire of 1739, it was decided to move the town away from the castle's vicinity. The final site was decided in 1777, and in the following decade the town was built on its present site. The abandoned town site remained under Crown administration.

The first brick buildings were decided upon in the early 1840s in the southern part of the area for the Russian 7th Line Battalion. Shortly before, it had been decided to develop the castle complex exclusively for use as a prison. Intendant E.B. Lohrmann's plans for the new barracks were completed in 1845. Although the original building programme was reduced for cost reasons, Lohrmann's plan and the parts realised in 1848-1851 formed the starting point for the later additional construction in the area.

Barracks construction continued in the 1870s and 1910s, following the basic solution developed by Lohrmann: main barracks elevations facing west, with central courtyards and rear yards sloping down to the shore, and rows of outbuildings separating the yards. In the second half of the 19th century the depot functions moved away from the northern part of the area, which developed into a park-like residential area for soldiers, consisting mainly of wooden buildings.

After the garrison, the premises housed, among other things, the Artillery Museum. The area is to be converted for residential and office use.
