Erikoissairaalan perustamista reumasairauksien hoitoa varten suunniteltiin jo 1930-luvulla. Maamme ensimmäinen Reumaparantola toimi Heinolan entisen kylpylän tiloissa vuosina 1946-1951.

Toimintaa tukemaan perustettiin 1946 Reumasäätiö, jonka osakkaiksi tulivat valtiovalta, kansaneläkelaitos ja eri järjestöt ja laitokset. Säätiön tehtäväksi tuli rakentaa maamme ensimmäinen reumasairaala. Sairaalan sijoituspaikaksi valittiin lämpimän ja vähäsateisen ilmaston vuoksi Heinola.

Arkkitehti Martti Välikankaan suunnittelema kymmenkerroksinen sairaala sekä asuntolarakennus valmistuivat 1951. Sairaalassa oli valmistuessaan 317 vuodepaikkaa.

The Reumasäätiön sairaala in Heinola is a monumental specialist hospital complex, whose location and architecture reflect the ideals of modern hospital building in the 1950s. The national specialist hospital is also known internationally as a highly regarded pioneer of rheumatism treatment.

Built on a ridge rising from the head of the narrow Maitiaislahti bay, which belongs to Konnivesi, to the north-east of Heinola, the 10-storey hospital and residential tower of the Reumasäätiön sairaala dominates the landscape. The original appearance has been changed to a small extent by the low wing buildings and the glazing of the balconies.

The hospital and residential building was designed by architect Martti Välikangas. The hospital building follows the block hospital type, which has been common since the early 20th century, in which the hospital consists of a single building mass, with the functions placed one above another on different floors.

Plans for a specialist hospital for treating rheumatic diseases were already being made in the 1930s. The country's first Reumaparantola operated in the premises of the former spa in Heinola from 1946 to 1951.

To support this work, the Reumasäätiö foundation was established in 1946. Its shareholders included the state, the Social Insurance Institution (Kansaneläkelaitos) and various organisations and institutions. The foundation's task was to build the country's first rheumatism hospital. Heinola was chosen as the site for the hospital because of its warm and relatively dry climate.

The ten-storey hospital and residential building, designed by architect Martti Välikangas, were completed in 1951. When completed, the hospital had 317 beds.
