Kuvaus
Mierolan, Rahkoilan ja Ventolan kylät kuvastavat liikenteellisesti merkittävään vesiväylän ja historiallisten tielinjojen leikkauskohtaan keskiajalta nykypäiviin asti muotoutunutta kyläasutusta.
Mierolan virta jakaa Mierolan kylän kahteen osaan. Kantatalojen asuintontit sijaitsevat Vanajaveden kapeikon eteläpuolisella tasaisella rannalla Hattulan vanhalta kirkolta tulevan maantien ja siitä Parolaan erkanevan tien risteyksessä. Sillan pohjoispuolisella jyrkkärinteisellä mäellä, maantien länsilaidalla, on pienillä tonteillaan 1800- ja 1900-luvun alussa syntyneen käsityöläiskylän rakennuksia ja maantien länsipuolella muutamia huvilamaisia asuinrakennuksia, joista mainittakoon harjanteen korkeimmalla paikalla sijaitseva tornillinen ateljeehuvila Hiidenlinna.
Mierolan kolmiaukkoinen, 1918 rakennettu 45 metriä pitkä betoninen holvisilta ylittää Mierolan salmen paikassa, jossa Hämeenlinnasta pohjoiseen johtava vanha maantie leikkaa Vanajaveden kapeikon.
Rahkoilan kylään rajautuvan harjun laella sijaitseva Hattulan uusgoottilainen tiilikirkko on 1850-luvulta. Kirkon lounaispuolella on harjun rinteeseen sovitettu, kohti Mierolanvirtaa laskeutuva hautausmaa.
Rahkoilan historiallinen kyläkeskus on uuden kirkon pohjoispuolella Vanajaveden rannalla.
Rannalla on lisäksi Suvannon huvila 1900-luvun alkupuolelta.
Historia
Varhaisin historiallinen tieto Mierolan kylästä on 1300-luvun alkupuolelta, jolloin Tavast-suku omisti kylässä tilan. Kylän vanha tonttimaa sijaitsee virran etelärannalla sillan pielessä. Vanhoilla tonteillaan sijaitsevat Uotilan, Rantalan, Tommenin ja Pihamaan tilat. Ventolaan johtavan tien varrella on vanha 1800-luvun tuparakennus paikalla, jossa on aikoinaan ollut rakuunantorppa. Toinen keskiajalla mainittu tila on Mierolan Parkku, jonka maat otettiin pappilalle 1405. 1500-luvulla Mierolassa mainitaan olleen Sorkkala, Kirrilä, Foudila, Lottila, Rasi, Rokkala, Jussila ja Uotila.
Sillan pohjoispuolelle rakennettiin Hattulan uusi kirkko 1857 intendentti E.B. Lohrmannin piirustusten mukaan. Kirkon tiilet valmistettiin läheiseen Koreilanlahteen perustetussa tiiliruukissa.
Silta korjattiin museosillaksi 1980-luvun alussa.
Hattulan vanhimpiin kyliin kuuluvan Rahkoilan keskiaikanen kylätontti sijaitsi kirkon pohjoispuolella. Kylien rajalle Tasalan talon maille rakentui 1800-luvun lopulta käsityöläisasutusta.
Ventolan kylä mainitaan ensimmäisen kerran 1440-luvulla. Kylän kolmesta talosta muodostettiin 1600-luvun alkupuolella rustholli.

Description
Mierola, Rahkoila and Ventola villages reflect the settlement that developed from the Middle Ages to the present day at the point where a significant waterway meets historical road alignments.
The Mierola stream divides the village of Mierola into two parts. The residential plots of the original farmsteads lie on the flat shore south of the Vanajavesi narrows, at the junction of the road coming from the old church in Hattula and the road branching off towards Parola. On the steep hill north of the bridge, on the west side of the road, are buildings of a craftsmen's village that arose in the early 19th and 20th centuries on small plots, and on the west side of the road are several villa-like residential buildings, among which the atelier villa Hiidenlinna, with a tower, stands at the highest point of the ridge.
The three-span, 45-metre-long concrete arch bridge at Mierola, built in 1918, crosses the Mierola strait at the point where the old road running north from Hämeenlinna crosses the Vanajavesi narrows.
The neo-Gothic brick church of Hattula, from the 1850s, stands on the crest of the ridge bordering the village of Rahkoila. On the south-west side of the church is the cemetery, fitted into the slope of the ridge and descending towards the Mierola stream.
The historical village centre of Rahkoila is on the shore of the Vanajavesi, north of the new church. Rahkoila is one of the oldest villages in Hattula and has also been among the largest in terms of number of farms. From the Middle Ages until the 18th century, the village plots were located mainly in the area of today's Niemelä. The three farms of the Niemelä area, Niemelä, Puontila and Oravainen, remain on their original site. Together they form a whole that is architecturally and scenically valuable.
Two historical roads cross in the village of Rahkoila, forming part of the old road network of the Vanajavesi valley. West of the road leading to Pälkäne are the historical road alignments leading towards Tyrväntö and Pälkäne. Along the road at Tanhuanpää, settlements of cottagers and craftsmen developed during the 19th century. In places, old stone fences frame the road. Although the building stock of the area has in part been renewed, its distinctive history can still be read in the environment.
The village centre of Ventola, merged into a single farm, is situated on the west shore of the Mierola strait. The main building and outbuildings of Ventola, located in a prominent position in the Vanajavesi narrows, date from the first half of the 20th century. On the shore there is also the Suvanto villa, from the first half of the 20th century.
The villages of Mierola and Rahkoila are part of the Vanajavesi valley and Aulanko landscape area, which is of national significance.
History
The earliest historical record of the village of Mierola dates from the first half of the 14th century, when the Tavast family owned a holding in the village. The village's old tonttimaa lies on the southern bank of the stream, at the end of the bridge. The Uotila, Rantala, Tommen and Pihamaa farms are on their old village plots. Along the road leading to Ventola stands an old 19th-century tupa building, on the site where a dragoon croft once stood. The other farm mentioned in the Middle Ages is Parkku in Mierola, whose lands were taken for the parsonage in 1405. In the 16th century, Mierola is recorded as having had Sorkkala, Kirrilä, Foudila, Lottila, Rasi, Rokkala, Jussila and Uotila. Mierola was in a central location for water and road traffic; for example, the Lotti farm served for a long time as a coaching inn.
The present building stock of the kantatila farms is typical of its period and well preserved, and it largely dates from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The village expanded in the 19th century to the north side of the bridge, where mainly cottages and villas were built. On the north side of the bridge, the new Hattula church was built in 1857 to the drawings of intendant E.B. Lohrmann. The bricks for the church were made at a brickworks founded in nearby Koreilanlahti.
In the Mierola strait there was, in 1904, a wooden trestle bridge (tukiansassilta), which was destroyed during the Civil War. The new bridge was ordered to be built by the state, and construction was assigned to Oy Constructor Ab. Construction began immediately, and the bridge was opened to traffic in October 1919. The bridge was restored as a museum bridge in the early 1980s.
The medieval village site of Rahkoila, one of the oldest villages in Hattula, was located on the north side of the church. Of the farms, Niemelä, Puontila and Oravainen have kept their old village sites. The main building of Niemelä in Rahkoila village was built in 1906, that of Puontila in 1890 and that of Rekola in the 1890s. From the late 19th century, craftsmen's settlement developed on the boundary between the villages, on the lands of the Tasala farm.
The village of Ventola is first mentioned in the 1440s. In the first half of the 17th century, three farms of the village were combined to form a rustholli.
