The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Ilomantsin Kauppatien rakennusrivistö on hyvin säilynyt esimerkki suomalaisesta sotienjälkeisestä kirkonkyläraitista.

Ilomantsi on Pohjois-Karjalan vanhin hallintopitäjä. Kauppatien alueella on 1930-1950-luvulla rakennettuja liikerakennuksia, kuten Pohjois-Karjalan Osuuskaupan tasakattoinen funkionalistinen kauppa.

Liike-elämä keskittyi uuden tien varteen uusiin liiketaloihin. Alatieltä eli nykyiseltä Kauppatieltä siirtyi useita liikkeitä Kalevalantielle.

The building row along Kauppatie in Ilomantsi is a well-preserved example of a Finnish post-war church village street.

Ilomantsi is the oldest administrative parish in North Karelia. Its administrative village centre has been at Pappilanvaara, but the commercial centre developed along Kauppatie. The Kauppatie area has commercial buildings from the 1930s–1950s, such as the flat-roofed functionalist shop of Pohjois-Karjalan Osuuskauppa. Some of the commercial buildings are now in residential use. The area also contains detached houses, a fire station, and a former workers' hall, now a cinema. At Kotimäki, at the northern end of the area, there is the Kotimäen koulu and one of the few surviving kunnallistalo buildings in the country.

Kauppatie, formerly Alatie, was the main road of the church village of Ilomantsi, alongside Ylätie and Ruskosillantie. The main roads formed a circle about 3 km in length. Business life was concentrated along Alatie. Many private merchants operated there, from general stores to specialist shops, as well as the Osuuskauppa, a kahvilakonditoria, and branch offices of four different banks. A workers' hall with a dance pavilion also stood along Alatie.

In the 1960s, with a new building plan, the church village of Ilomantsi received a new main road, Kalevalantie. The new road was built to cut through the centre of the village and former pasture lands. Business life shifted to the new road, to new commercial buildings. Several businesses moved from Alatie, now Kauppatie, to Kalevalantie.
