Kuvaus
Pääosa Otavan rakennuksista on eri puolille Suomea toteutettujen yhtenäisten teollisuusyhdyskuntien luottosuunnittelijan arkkitehti W.G. Palmqvistin käsialaa.
Otavan asuinrakennukset ovat puisia tyyppitaloja, joita jälleenrakennuskaudella ryhdyttiin suunnittelemaan mm. pienille teollisuuspaikkakunnille. Otavan asunnot on järjestetty hierarkisesti alueen läpi kulkevan raitin varrelle. Kirjapainokylän nelitaloissa perinteinen työväenasunnon huone ja keittiö on kasvanut useamman huoneen rivitaloasunnoksi.
Hallintorakennuksena ja ruokalana on 1950-luvun punatiilinen kirjapainorakennus, johon liittyy teollisuushalli.
Alueen pohjoisreunalla on Otavan kirjailijan Olavi Paavolaisen rakennuttama huvilarakennus.
Historia
Otava-kustannusyhtiön kasvava liiketoiminta keskitettiin kustannuksiltaan edulliselle maaseudulle hyvien kuljetusyhteyksien päähän. Tuotantolaitosta varten ostettiin Keuruun Rautoniemen maatila, jonka pihapiiriin rakennettiin tehdas- ja asuntoalue arkkitehti W.G. Palmqvistin 1947 tekemän kokonaissuunnitelman pohjalta. Otava rakennutti alueelle 1947 maantien ja rautatien pistoraiteen 1951.
Kirjapaino aloitti toimintansa 1955, mihin mennessä valmistuivat tehdasrakennukset ja 10 satulakattoista neljänperheen asuintaloa, kaksi vierastaloa, neljä työnjohtajille tarkoitettua kahdenperheen asuinrakennusta sekä paikallisjohtajan asunto.
Keuruulla työskentelivät ja asuivat monet Otavan taiteilijat ja kirjailijat (mm. Einari Vuorela, Lauri Santtu, Onni Oja jne). Kirjailija Olavi Paavolainen oleskeli Keuruulla 1946-1962. Paavolainen rakennutti kirjapainon lähelle 1949 arkkitehti Laila Niemiojan suunnitteleman huvilan, jossa oli vaikutteita perheen Terijoen huvilasta.

Description
The Otava printing village is a unique example of a printing works built in the countryside and its residential community.
The Otava printing works and its residential areas, on the shore of Rautolahti in Keuruu, date from the early 1950s and illustrate the sequence of events typical of the birth of industry in a rural location, as well as the building methods of the post-war reconstruction period. The majority of the Otava buildings are the work of architect W.G. Palmqvist, lead designer of uniform industrial communities built in various parts of Finland.
The Otava residential buildings are wooden standard-type houses, which began to be designed during the reconstruction period, among others for small industrial localities. The Otava dwellings are arranged hierarchically along the raitti that runs through the area. In the fourplex houses of the printing village, the traditional workers' dwelling of one room and kitchen has grown into a terraced dwelling with several rooms.
The administration building and canteen is a red-brick printing building from the 1950s, to which an industrial hall is attached.
On the northern edge of the area stands a villa building commissioned by Olavi Paavolainen, an Otava author.
History
The growing business of the Otava publishing company was concentrated in the countryside at Keuruu, where costs were low and there were good transport links. For the production plant, the Rautoniemi farm at Keuruu was bought. A factory and residential area was built in the farmyard, based on the overall plan drawn up in 1947 by architect W.G. Palmqvist. Otava had a public road and a railway siding built to the area, the road in 1947 and the siding in 1951.
The printing works began operating in 1955, by which time the factory buildings were complete, along with ten gable-roofed four-family residential buildings, two guest houses, four two-family residential buildings for foremen, and the residence of the local manager.
Many of Otava's artists and writers worked and lived at Keuruu (including Einari Vuorela, Lauri Santtu, Onni Oja, etc.). The writer Olavi Paavolainen stayed at Keuruu from 1946-1962. In 1949 Paavolainen had a villa designed by architect Laila Niemioja built near the printing works, which showed influences from the family's Terijoki villa.
