The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Jyväskylän vanhan rautatieaseman alue rakennuksineen on merkittävä historiallinen kerrostuma kaupunkirakenteessa.

Thure Hällströmin piirustuksilla tehty asemaravintola sai oman rakennuksen Pieksämäki-rataa rakennettaessa 1916-1917.

Rautatieaseman toiminnot siirtyivät pohjoispuolelle rakennettuun matkakeskukseen 2002.

The area of the old Jyväskylä railway station, with its buildings, is a significant historical layer in the urban structure.

The railway station is located in the southern part of the extensive station area once built on the shore of Jyväsjärvi. Next to it is a separate station restaurant completed in 1916, and on the other side are two residential buildings and outbuildings. A light-traffic bridge now separates the stationmaster's house from the rest of the residential area.

Route alignments through or past Jyväskylä were planned from 1872 onwards. In Jyväskylä in 1887 a general railway meeting was held to promote obtaining the railway, attended by representatives of five towns and 41 rural municipalities. However, the decision on building the line was postponed to the 1894 Diet because of the construction of the main lines.

The station site was first planned at Taulumäki, from where a two-kilometre-long harbour siding would have run to the shore of Jyväsjärvi. Soon, however, it was found to be cheaper to have the line run along the shoreline.

The Keskisen Suomen poikkirata was only completed in 1919, when the Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki section was finished.

The station building, engine shed, railway staff dwellings for officials, and the stationmaster's house were completed in 1897, designed by Bruno Granholm. The station building was extended and a goods space was added. The station restaurant, built to drawings by Thure Hällström, received its own building during construction of the Pieksämäki line in 1916-1917.

Railway station operations moved in 2002 to a travel centre built on the north side.
