The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Mäntyharjun IV luokan rautatieasema ja sitä ympäröivä laaja asema-alue ovat molemmin puolin Savon rataa Pyhäveteen työntyvän Kurkiniemen tuntumassa. Asemarakennus on järven rannalla, asuinalue radan itäpuolisella rinteellä.

1889 valmistunutta asemarakennusta on laajennettu 1907.

Savon rata Kouvolasta Mikkelin kautta Kuopioon avattiin liikenteelle 1889. Mäntyharju oli yksi radan IV luokan asemista. Asemarakennuksissa käytettiin hyväksi Oulun ja Vaasan radan piirustuksia. Rautatieyhteyden saaminen merkitsi Mäntyharjulle maataloustuotteiden kaupan ja teollisuuden, erityisesti sahateollisuuden, kuljetusten helpottumista. Se myös synnytti uutta yritystoimintaa, mm. kenkätehtaan. Asemalle perustettiin 1892 posti, joka muutettiin 1903 postitoimistoksi. Hallan sahan siirtorata valmistui 1910.

Asema-aluetta laajennettiin 1927 sen jälkeen kun radan kiskotus oli vaihdettu raskaampaan ja Kiepin rautatiesilta kunnostettu 1922.

The Class IV railway station of Mäntyharju and the extensive station area surrounding it lie on both sides of the Savo line, near Kurkiniemi, which projects into Pyhävesi. The station building is on the lakeshore, and the residential area is on the slope east of the track.

The station building, completed in 1889, was extended in 1907. Next to the station building are the goods storehouse, completed in 1903, and a simple guard house built in 1901. In the residential area east of the track are the double guard house built in 1927 and two residential barracks with their outbuildings.

The Savo line from Kouvola via Mikkeli to Kuopio was opened to traffic in 1889. Mäntyharju was one of the Class IV stations on the line. Drawings of the Oulun rata and the Vaasan rata were used for the station buildings. Gaining a railway connection meant easier transport for Mäntyharju of trade in agricultural products and of industry, especially the sawmill industry. It also gave rise to new business activity, including a shoe factory. A post office was established at the station in 1892, which was converted into a post office in 1903. The siding of the Halla sawmill was completed in 1910.

The station area was extended in 1927, after the track's rails had been replaced with heavier ones and the Kiepi railway bridge had been restored in 1922.
