Kuvaus
Mäntyharjun vanha keskusta julkisine rakennuksineen on esimerkki vielä ennen sotia yleisestä kirkonkylien rakennustavasta. Vanha keskusta säästyi suurilta muutoksilta, kun pitäjän kaupallinen keskusta 1800-luvun lopulla kasvoi rautatien vaikutuspiiriin.
Mäntyharjun kirkonkylän keskusta on alkanut kasvaa 1800-luvun puolivälin jälkeen nauhamaisesti maantien varteen ja alueella on säilynyt julkisten rakennusten lisäksi vanhaa asuinrakennuskantaa 1800-luvun lopulta ja 1900-luvun alusta.
Vanhan maantien vartella on Matti Salosen johdolla 1819-1822 rakennettu ristikirkko, sitä vastapäätä maantien toisella puolen järven rannassa Salmelan taidekeskus, entinen kunnantupa 1823-1931. Raitin varrella ovat vanha kansakoulu 1873, kunnansairaalana toiminut rakennus 1880-l ja korkealle mäelle rakennettu kirkkoherranpappila, Iso-pappila 1812, sekä maantien eteläpäässä oleva 1950-luvun lääkäritalo. Pyhäveden rannan puistomaisessa ympäristössä on mm. entinen apteekki eli Domanderin talo 1874 sekä postitalo vesimaiseman puolelle avautuvine kuisteineen ja vesirajassa olevine venevajoineen. Kylän etelälaidan mäellä on jugendvaikutteinen seuraintalo, joka on maakunnan vanhin nuorisoseurantalo.
Pyhäveden ja Siirlahden välisellä kannaksella sijaitseva monumentaalinen kirkko on tasavartinen basilikaalinen ristikirkko. Kukin ristivarsi on jaettu puisilla pylväillä kolmeen laivaan, joista keskilaiva on leveämpi ja korkeampi, mikä näkyy myös kirkon ulkoarkkitehtuurissa. Sivulaivoja reunustavat lehterit. Ristikeskuksen päällä kohoaa kulmikas lukuisilla ikkunoilla varustettu lanterniini. Kirkkosalin seinät ovat hirsipintaiset.
Mäntyharjun entisellä kirkkoherranpappilalla on huomattava asema Suomen pappila-arkkitehtuurissa.
Historia
Iitin kappelina toiminut Mäntyharjun seurakunta itsenäistyi 1595. Nykyinen kirkko on seurakunnan kolmas. Alttaritaulu Kristuksen taivaaseenastuminen vuodelta 1839 on Berndt Godenhjelmin maalaama.
Kirkon vaakasuuntainen ulkolaudoitus tehtiin 1830-luvun lopulla, ristikeskuksen lanterniini valmistui 1861. Kirkon nykyasu on tulos arkkitehti Rafael Blomstedtin johdolla 1929-1930 tehdystä restauroinnista, jolloin mm. alttari siirrettiin lännemmäksi, jotta sakaristosta saatiin seurakuntasali.
Iso-Pappila valmistui 1812. Empiretyylinen ulkoasu valmistui pääosin 1850-luvulla. Pihan vanhat talousrakennukset rakennettiin 1820-luvulla.

Description
The old centre of Mäntyharju, with its public buildings, is an example of the church village building style that was still common before the wars. The old centre was spared major changes when the parish's commercial centre grew within the sphere of influence of the railway at the end of the 19th century.
The centre of the Mäntyharju church village began to grow in a linear fashion along the old road after the mid-19th century, and besides the public buildings the area has preserved older residential buildings from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
Along the old road stands the cruciform church built in 1819-1822 under the direction of Matti Salonen, and opposite it, on the other side of the road by the lake shore, is the Salmela art centre, the former municipal hall of 1823-1931. Along the street are the old elementary school of 1873, the building that served as the municipal hospital in the 1880s, and the vicarage Iso-pappila of 1812, built on a high hill, as well as the 1950s doctor's house at the southern end of the road. In the park-like setting by the shore of Lake Pyhävesi are, among others, the former pharmacy, the Domander house of 1874, and the post office building with its porches opening onto the lake view and its boathouses at the water's edge. On the hill at the southern edge of the village stands a youth society building with Jugend influences, which is the oldest youth society building in the province.
The monumental church, located on the isthmus between Lake Pyhävesi and Siirlahti, is an equal-armed basilica-type cruciform church. Each arm of the cross is divided by wooden columns into three aisles, of which the central aisle is wider and higher, which is also visible in the exterior architecture of the church. The side aisles are bordered by galleries. Above the crossing rises an angular lantern with numerous windows. The walls of the church hall are of log surface.
The former parsonage of Mäntyharju holds a significant position in Finnish parsonage architecture.
History
The Mäntyharju parish, which was a chapel of Iitti, became independent in 1595. The present church is the parish's third. The first drawing of the church was prepared by church builder Matias Salonen, and on its basis a new plan was drawn up in the Intendant's Office by Charles Bassi, completed in 1819. Salonen served as master of the construction work, which began in 1819. The first service in the church was held in January 1822. The altarpiece The Ascension of Christ, dating from 1839, is painted by Berndt Godenhjelm.
The horizontal exterior boarding of the church was carried out at the end of the 1830s, and the lantern of the crossing was completed in 1861. The church's present appearance is the result of a restoration carried out in 1929-1930 under the direction of architect Rafael Blomstedt, during which, among other things, the altar was moved further west so that a parish hall could be gained from the sacristy. An interior repair was carried out in 1975 to a design by architect Heikki Havas.
The bell tower has a tall octagonal lower section and, above it, a broad, empire-style boarded square bell storey. Attached to the churchyard, on the slope descending to the lake on the north-east side of the church, is a cemetery built in the 1890s and enclosed by a stone wall.
Opposite the church, the former municipal hall is formed by two parish halls, Savo and Karelia, built side by side in the 1820s from the logs of a church that had been demolished. The parish halls were joined together in the 1850s and 1880s, and the building became the centre of municipal administration. The building was extended in 1919 and raised to two storeys in 1931.
Iso-Pappila was completed in 1812. Its Empire-style exterior was largely completed in the 1850s. The old outbuildings in the yard were built in the 1820s.
