The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Keski-Suomen kansanopisto on yksi maan vanhimmista kansanopistoista ja sen 1900-luvun alun päärakennus edustava esimerkki kansanopistojen vilkkaasta rakennusvaiheesta. Opistorakennuksen suunnittelija Yrjö Blomstedt on kansallisromanttisen kauden arkkitehti, jolla on Jyväskylän seminaarin lehtorina ollut myös suuri vaikutus käsityö- ja taideopetuksen uudistajana.

Suojärven rantamaisemassa oleva hirsinen opistorakennus on valmistunut 1912. Jugend-vaikutteinen opisto on edelleen alkuperäisessä käytössä ja säilynyt olennaisilta osiltaan Blomstedtin suunnittelemassa asussa.

Kansanopiston uudemmat rakennukset ovat pihapiirin laidalla, vanhimmalla päärakennuksella on keskeinen asema järvenrantaan rajautuvassa maisemassa.

Suolahdesta kasvoi 1800-luvun lopulta alkaen elinvoimainen yhdyskunta teollisuuden, rautatien, vesiliikenteen ja Keski-Suomen kansanopiston vaikutuspiirissä.

Suomen ensimmäinen kansanopisto perustettiin 1889 Kangasalle. Kansanopistoliike pyrki kohottamaan nuoren aikuisväestön yleistä sivistystasoa ja herättämään kansallista kulttuuritietoutta. Kansanopistoja perustettiin kymmeniä vuoteen 1917 mennessä.

Vanhimpiin kansanopistoihin kuuluva Keski-Suomen opisto aloitti toimintansa 1894 Äänekoskella. Opiston perustivat Keski-Suomen Maanviljelysseura, Jyväskylän seminaarin lehtorit ja Helsingin yliopiston Hämäläis-Osakunnnan opiskelijat. Uudet toimitilat rakennettiin Suolahteen, jonne opisto siirtyi 1912.

Keski-Suomen kansanopiston vanha päärakennus peruskorjattiin 1990-luvulla arkkitehti Severi Blomstedtin johdolla.

Arkkitehti Asténin suunnittelema kolmikerroksinen uudempi opistorakennus valmistui kansanopistoon 1930.

Keski-Suomen kansanopisto is one of the oldest folk high schools in the country, and its early 20th-century main building is a representative example of the lively building phase of folk high schools. The designer of the college building, Yrjö Blomstedt, is an architect of the national romantic period, who, as a lecturer at the Jyväskylä seminary, also had a great influence as a reformer of craft and art education.

The log college building in the lakeshore landscape of Suojärvi was completed in 1912. The college, with Jugend influences, is still in its original use and has survived largely in the form designed by Blomstedt.

The newer buildings of the folk high school are at the edge of the courtyard; the oldest main building holds a central position in the landscape bordered by the lakeshore.

From the end of the 19th century onward, Suolahti grew into a vigorous community within the sphere of influence of industry, the railway, water transport and the Keski-Suomen kansanopisto.

Finland's first folk high school was founded in 1889 in Kangasala. The folk high school movement aimed to raise the general educational level of the young adult population and to awaken national cultural awareness. Dozens of folk high schools were founded by 1917.

The Keski-Suomen opisto, one of the oldest folk high schools, began its activities in 1894 in Äänekoski. The institute was founded by the Keski-Suomen Maanviljelysseura, lecturers of the Jyväskylä seminary and students of the Hämäläis-Osakunta of the University of Helsinki. New premises were built in Suolahti, to which the institute moved in 1912.

The college building was designed by architect Yrjö Blomstedt, who worked not only as an architect but also as lecturer in woodcraft and drawing at the Jyväskylä seminary. Blomstedt played a key role when the principles of the so-called international aesthetic movement began to be applied in Finnish art education at the beginning of the 20th century. At the Jyväskylä seminary he carried out a reform of the teaching programme which brought the ideals of Finnish National Romanticism into the teaching of drawing and crafts. In the same spirit, he sought to promote the teaching of handicrafts in other educational institutions too.

The old main building of the Keski-Suomen kansanopisto was thoroughly renovated in the 1990s under architect Severi Blomstedt.

The three-storey newer college building designed by architect Astén was completed for the folk high school in 1930. After the wars, a windmill and a small granary dating from the 19th century were moved into the courtyard. The two-storey, brick-faced residential and college buildings, as well as Suolahti-sali, were completed at the turn of the 2000s.
