The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kuhmoisten kirkko on Suomen 1700-luvun jälkipuoliskon merkittävimpiin kirkonrakentajiin kuuluvan Matti Åkerblomin tuotantoa.

Kirkko on pohjamuodoltaan sisäviisteinen ristikirkko. Suhteikkaan kirkkorakennuksen ulkoseinissä on empiretyylinen ulkovuoraus korostettuine kulmapilastereineen. Paanukaton keskeltä kohoaa korkea paanupeitteinen viirintanko. Kirkkosalia leimaa 1930-luvulla tehty uudistus.

Lounaissuomalaista tapulityyppiä edustavan 1700-luvun loppupuolen kellotapulin huipussa ollut tyypillinen sipulikupoli on myöhemmin korvattu kahdeksankulmaisella kartiolla. Tapulissa on samanlainen empiretyyppinen vuoraus kuin kirkossa.

Kirkonmäkeä vastapäätä, tien toisella puolella, on seurakunnan vanha hautausmaa. Kirkkotarhaan johtava leveärunkoinen porttihuone, ns. paarihuone, on rakennettu 1875. Kirkonmaisemaan kuuluu myös hirsinen 1860-1873 rakennettu lainamakasiini. Kylätien rinteellä on myös 1950-luvun kanttorila. Kirkon alapuolelle on valmistunut seurakuntakoti 1997.

Kirkon ulkovuoraus on vuodelta 1828. Sisäseinien puuvuoraus tehtiin 1887 arkkitehti Alfred Cavénin suunnitteleman korjauksen yhteydessä. Koko sisätila uusittiin 1932 arkkitehti Kauno S. Kallion suunnitelmien mukaan.

The Kuhmoinen church hill, with its wooden church and bell tower, forms the landscape highlight of the village and, together with the other church buildings along the village road, represents a typical church milieu. The Kuhmoinen church is part of the work of Matti Åkerblom, one of the most significant church builders in Finland in the second half of the 18th century.

The church is a cross church with inward-angled corners. The outer walls of the well-proportioned church building have an Empire-style exterior cladding with accentuated corner pilasters. From the middle of the shingle roof rises a tall shingle-clad weather vane pole. The nave is characterised by a renovation carried out in the 1930s.

The typical onion dome that once topped the late 18th-century bell tower, representing the south-western Finnish bell tower type, was later replaced with an octagonal cone. The bell tower has the same Empire-type cladding as the church.

Opposite the church hill, on the other side of the road, is the parish's old cemetery. The broad-bodied gatehouse leading to the churchyard, the so-called paarihuone, was built in 1875. The landscape around the church also includes a log-built loan storehouse built in 1860-1873. On the slope of the village road there is also the cantor's house from the 1950s. A parish home was completed below the church in 1997.

Kuhmoinen is mentioned as a chapel of the mother parish of Padasjoki as early as 1540. Kuhmoinen was its own parish, with its own vicar, from 1639 to 1741. After that, Kuhmoinen was a chapel of Padasjoki until 1860, when it became an independent parish of its own.

The church was built in 1784-1785 under Matti Åkerblom, and the separate bell tower, built by Matti Åkergren, followed the next year. The exterior cladding of the church dates from 1828. The wooden lining of the interior walls was installed in 1887, in connection with repairs designed by architect Alfred Cavén. The entire interior was renewed in 1932 to designs by architect Kauno S. Kallio.
