Kuvaus
Toppilan salmen rantavyöhyke satamineen ja eri-ikäisine teollisuuslaitoksineen on monipuolinen teollisuushistoriallinen kokonaisuus. Oulujoen vuoden 1724 suurtulvan muodostama salmi on vanha Oulun ulkosatama ja alueella on Oulun vanhinta teollisuushistoriaa.
Toppilan rakennuskantaan kuuluu 1800-luvun jälkipuolen huviloita ja 1900-luvun alun teollisuusrakennuksia. Alueen vanhinta rakennuskantaa edustaa mallasjuomatehtaan nikkarityylinen huvila, jonka ympäristöön kuuluu puistikko vanhoine jalopuineen.
Uusrenessanssityylinen rautatieasema vuodelta 1886 on valmistunut Oulu-Seinäjoki –rataosuuden rakentamisen yhteydessä.
Sataman käyttö on loppunut. Sen vanhaan ympäristöön kuuluu vanhoja varastorakennuksia ja viljasiiloja 1920-1930-luvulta. Vaasan punatiilisen Höyrymyllyn kaksi alinta kerrosta ovat vuodelta 1924. Rakennusta on korotettu kahdella kerroksella 1927 arkkitehti W.G. Palmqvistin suunnitelmin. Viereinen Raision viljasiilo on O.J. Ermalan ja Kalle Salon suunnittelema vuodelta 1950. Salmen rannassa kohoavat myös SOK:n funktionaliset höyrymylly ja siilot, jotka on rakennettu SOK:n rakennusosaston arkkitehti Valde Alangon suunnitelmin (1928, siilot 1937). Alueella on lisäksi SOK:n konttorirakennus (1941), joka on tehty SOK:n arkkitehti Erkki Huttusen piirustusten mukaan.
Toppilan selluloosatehtaan Toppila Oy:n 1930-luvun rakennuksista on jäljellä modernin teollisuusarkkitehtuurin klassikko, Alvar Aallon suunnittelema hakesiilo, keittämö, kuivaamo ja voimala. Toppilan seuratalo on Gustaf Strandbergin suunnittelema tiilivuorattu funkisrakennus, joka on valmistunut 1938 Toppila Oy:n kerhotaloksi.
Historia
Alueelle 1800-luvun jälkimmäiseltä puoliskolta alkaen rakennetuista paristakymmenestä huvilasta on muutama jäljellä.
Toppilansalmen rannalle keskittyi 1800-luvulla teollisuuslaitoksia; mm. 1864 perustettu Toppilan olutpanimo, J.W. Snellmanin 1878 perustama höyrysaha ja 1900-luvun alussa keskusliikkeiden varastorakennuksia.
Englantilaisen Dixonin perheyhtiön perustama Toppila Oy:n osakeyhtiö perustettiin 1927 ja tuotantolaitos aloitti toimintansa 1931. Sulfiittiselluloosatehtaan rakennukset piirsi arkkitehti Alvar Aalto.

Description
The shoreline of the Toppilansalmi strait, with its harbour and industrial plants of various ages, forms a diverse industrial-historical ensemble. The strait, formed by the great flood of the Oulujoki river in 1724, is the old outer harbour of Oulu, and the area contains the oldest industrial history of Oulu.
The building stock of Toppila includes villas from the latter half of the 19th century and industrial buildings from the early 20th century. The oldest building in the area is the villa in the nikkari style of the malt beverage factory, whose surroundings include a park with old hardwood trees.
The neo-Renaissance railway station of 1886 was completed in connection with the building of the Oulu-Seinäjoki railway section.
The harbour is no longer in use. Its old surroundings include old storehouses and grain silos from the 1920s and 1930s. The two lowest storeys of the Vaasa red-brick Höyrymylly are from 1924. The building was raised by two storeys in 1927 to designs by architect W.G. Palmqvist. The neighbouring Raisio grain silo, designed by O.J. Ermala and Kalle Salo, dates from 1950. On the shore of the strait also rise the functionalist steam mill and silos of SOK, built to designs by Valde Alanko, architect of the SOK building department (1928, silos 1937). The area also includes the SOK office building (1941), made to drawings by SOK architect Erkki Huttunen.
From the 1930s buildings of the Toppila Oy cellulose factory, what remains is a classic of modern industrial architecture: the chip silo, boiling house, drying house and power plant designed by Alvar Aalto. The Toppila seuratalo is a brick-clad functionalist building designed by Gustaf Strandberg, completed in 1938 as the club house of Toppila Oy.
History
The waters of the great flood of the Oulujoki river in 1724 chose a new channel to the sea, and the small Toppila brook became the wide strait of Toppilansalmi, suitable as a harbour. Toppila began to develop into the outer harbour of Oulu when the town's merchants acquired quayside sites along the strait. The tar storage, sorting and marking place was located on the north shore of the strait. Into the Tervahovi, established in 1783, tar coming from the province was stored, and from there it was loaded onto sailing ships. During the Crimean War in 1854, English army units burned almost all the buildings on the shores of the strait. The Tervahovi burned in 1901, and the tar trade never regained its prosperity of the 19th century.
After the Crimean War the land between Toppilansalmi and Holstinsalmi was divided into plots, and along the shores of the strait the earliest villa settlement in the Oulu region formed. Of the few dozen villas built in the area from the second half of the 19th century onward, a few remain.
In the 19th century industrial plants concentrated on the shore of Toppilansalmi, including the Toppila brewery, founded in 1864, J.W. Snellman's steam sawmill, established in 1878, and, at the beginning of the 20th century, the storehouses of the central cooperatives.
The Toppila Oy joint-stock company, founded by the English Dixon family partnership, was established in 1927, and the production plant began operations in 1931. The buildings of the sulphite cellulose factory were designed by architect Alvar Aalto. The Dixons sold the factory in 1973 to Kajaani Oy, which closed the factory in 1985.
The City of Oulu bought the factory area in 1987, and the same year the city council approved the Koskela target plan, in which the factory area was reserved for a residential area of 2000 inhabitants. The former factory buildings were given new uses when the residential area was built: the boiling house was converted into student flats, the drying house became a shop/recycling centre, the laboratory a restaurant/kiosk, and the workshop, the heart of the area, a multi-service centre. No user has so far been found for the chip silo or the power plant building.
