Kuvaus
Koivuja kasvavan Franzéninpuiston keskellä on Erland Stenbergin 1879 veistämä Frans Mikael Franzénin (1772-1847) rintakuva. Tuomiokirkon korkea torni hallitsee puiston itäsivua. Empiretyylinen, keltaiseksi kalkittu kivikirkko on ollut tuomiokirkkona vuodesta 1900 koko Pohjois-Suomen hengellisen elämän keskus. Tuomiokirkon runkona on Sundvallissa toimineen, lukuisista kirkoistaan tunnetun Daniel Hagmanin suunnittelema, 1770-1777 rakennettu mansardikattoinen kivinen ristikirkko. Pohjakaavaltaan ristinmuotoisessa kirkossa on keskikupoli. Läntiseen ristivarteen liittyy korkea torni. Kirkon huomattavin taideteos on vuonna 1611 maalattu Johannes Messeniuksen muotokuva.
Franzénin (1772-1847) suvun talon pihassa seisoo kolmikerroksinen Siemssenin kivitalo vuodelta 1879. Puistoa reunustaa edelleen 1973 valmistunut Suomen Pankin rakennus, jonka suunnitteli pankille useita toimitiloja piirtänyt Aarne Ehojoki. Pankin vierellä on ns. Kolmiotalo, nelikerroksinen asuinkerrostalo vuodelta 1923 (K. Borg, J.S. Siren, Hj. Åberg).
Kirkkoa vastapäätä sijoitetun Oulun Lyseon vanhimman osan on suunnitellut C.L. Engel 1831. Entisen triviaalikoulun rakennusta on jatkettu molemmista päädyistä 1874-1875 ja sen sali on vuodelta 1900. Voimistelusali on E. Th. Granstedtin ja H- Lindbergin suunnittelema ja valmistunut 1908. Linnankadun puoleinen lisärakennus on vuodelta 1934. Koulun vieressä on entinen läänin maanmittauskonttori. Kaksikerroksisen kivirakennuksen ensimmäinen vaihe on E.B. Lohrmanin suunnittelema ja vuodelta 1859. Nykyasu on 1900-luvun alusta.
Uusrenessanssia edustava lääninhallituksen kaksikerroksinen päärakennus puiston pohjoislaidalla on L.I. Lindqvistin ja Jac. Ahrenbergin suunnittelema vuodelta 1887. Lisärakennus on valmistunut 1968. Puinen piharakennus on Julius Basilierin suunnittelema vaunuvaja vuodelta 1889.
Puiston kulmassa on Oulun NMKY:n vanha puutalo ”Ynninkulma” vuodelta 1825. Rakennuksen holvatut kellaritilat periytyvät osin 1600- ja 1700-luvulta.
Historia
Suuri osa Oulun kaupunkia tuhoutui tulipalossa 1822, ja kaksi vuotta myöhemmin J.A. Ehrenström ja C.L. Engel laativat keskustaa varten asemakaavan.
Kirkko uudistettiin perusteellisesti 1997-1998 (Arkkitehtitoimisto Laatio Oy). Tuolloin siihen lisättiin vuoden 1827 piirustusten aiemmin toteuttamatta jääneitä elementtejä kuten seinien pilasterointi ja holvin kasetointi.

Description
Oulu Cathedral, the Franzénin puisto park in front of it, and the public and private buildings surrounding the park on the streets form a whole that reflects Oulu's role as the administrative city of the province. The area around the park is concentrated with built heritage that has arisen since the founding of the town of Oulu and now mostly reflects development in the 19th century.
In the centre of Franzénin puisto, which is planted with birches, stands a bust of Frans Mikael Franzén (1772-1847) sculpted in 1879 by Erland Stenberg. The tall tower of the cathedral dominates the eastern side of the park. The Empire-style stone church, whitewashed yellow, has served as the cathedral since 1900 and is the centre of spiritual life for the whole of Northern Finland. The core of the cathedral is a mansard-roofed stone cruciform church built in 1770-1777, designed by Daniel Hagman, who worked in Sundsvall and is known for his many churches. The cruciform church has a central dome. A tall tower is attached to the western arm of the cross. The church's most notable work of art is a portrait of Johannes Messenius painted in 1611. The oldest chasubles, brass chandeliers and lampetit are from the 18th century.
On the south side of the church is the Öberg house, built in several phases, with Empire and Neo-Renaissance features, whose exterior was designed by architect Johan Oldenburg. The walls of the plinth and cellar may date from before the fire of 1822.
Parts of the cellar walls of the Franzén house, the Empire-style house built in the 1830s on the southern edge of the park, also predate the fire. In the courtyard of the house of the Franzén family, the poet and bishop F.M. Franzén (1772-1847), stands the three-storey Siemssen stone house from 1879. The park is still lined by the Suomen Pankin building, completed in 1973, which was designed by Aarne Ehojoki, who drew several premises for the bank. Next to the bank is the so-called Kolmiotalo, a four-storey residential block from 1923 (K. Borg, J.S. Siren, Hj. Åberg).
The oldest part of Oulun Lyseo, located opposite the church, was designed by C.L. Engel in 1831. The building of the former triviaalikoulu was extended at both ends in 1874-1875, and its hall dates from 1900. The gymnasium was designed by E. Th. Granstedt and H- Lindberg and completed in 1908. The annex on the Linnankatu side dates from 1934. Next to the school is the former provincial land surveying office. The first phase of the two-storey stone building was designed by E.B. Lohrman and dates from 1859. Its present appearance dates from the early 20th century.
The two-storey main building of the Provincial Government on the northern edge of the park, representing Neo-Renaissance, was designed by L.I. Lindqvist and Jac. Ahrenberg and dates from 1887. The annex was completed in 1968. The wooden outbuilding is a carriage house designed by Julius Basilier, dating from 1889.
At the corner of the park stands the old wooden house ”Ynninkulma” of Oulun NMKY, dating from 1825. The vaulted cellar spaces of the building partly date from the 17th and 18th centuries.
History
Much of the city of Oulu was destroyed in a fire in 1822, and two years later J.A. Ehrenström and C.L. Engel drew up a town plan for the centre. The church had already stood on its present site since the founding of the town in 1605, and the plan placed the present Franzéninpuisto, an open monumental square, in front of the church.
Oulu had become the provincial capital in 1776, and in the Ehrenström–Engel plan the church and the most important public buildings of the school system and administration, such as the triviaalikoulu, were placed around the market square as befitted its status. The south-western side of the park, however, remained as private plots.
The square was not planted as a park until after the bust of Franzén was erected in 1884. Until then the square served as a market square, and on the edge of Kirkkotori, on the site of the present Provincial Government plot, stood a vaakahuone.
The church was rebuilt after the fire of 1822 under the direction of master builder Jakob Kuorikoski, to a drawing prepared in the Intendentinkonttori, in 1827-1832. The church was, in its time, the largest church building in Finland after Turku Cathedral. The west tower was built in 1843-1844. The sacristy section was raised to two storeys in 1932 to a design by Oiva Kallio, and the central dome added after the fire was cast in concrete. The church was thoroughly renovated in 1997-1998 (Arkkitehtitoimisto Laatio Oy). At that time elements of the 1827 drawings that had earlier not been implemented were added, such as the pilaster articulation of the walls and the coffering of the vault.
