The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Laajan lähi- ja kaukonäkymän vaikuttavana kiintopisteenä oleva Ruokolahden kirkko ja pappila sijaitsevat mäellä Pappilanlahdelle laskevassa avoimena ja rakentamattomana säilyneessä maisemassa keskustaajaman kupeessa. Puukirkko on yli-intendentti E.B. Lohrmannin suunnittelema sisäviisteinen ristikirkko.

Ruokolahden kirkko on muodoltaan sisäviisteinen ristikirkko, ja siinä on suuri puolipyöreä, alareunastaan kaartuva keskikupoli. Nelikerroksinen suippopäätteinen torni liittyy läntiseen ristivarteen. Kirkkosalia kiertää lehterikerros, jonka pylväät kannattavat myös kupolia. Yli-intendentti E.B. Lohrmannin suunnittelemista puukirkoista Ruokolahden kanssa samaa tyyppiä edustaa mm. Rääkkylän kirkko.

Kirkon luona on Albert Edelfeltin maalaukselle "Ruokolahden eukot Kirkonmäellä" omistettu muistomerkki.

Muistomerkki on Ilmari Wirkkalan suunnittelema.

Hirsipintaisessa rakennuksessa on voimakkaasti muotoiltu komea empiretyylinen kattolista. Ruokolahti-talo on 1800-luvun talonpoikaistalon rekonstruktio.

Ruokolahti erotettiin Jääsken emäseurakunnasta 1572 itsenäiseksi seurakunnaksi. Nykyinen kirkko on seurakunnan kolmas. Edellinen kirkko oli vuodelta 1741.

Kirkko rakennettiin yli-intendentti E.B. Lohrmannin 1852 laatiman piirustuksen mukaan rakennusmestari Theodor Johan Tolpon johdolla ja se valmistui 1854.

Ruokolahtelaisen Tuomas Suikkasen johdolla rakennettu kellotapuli valmistui 1752. Sen mallina mainitaan olleen kirkonrakentaja Eskil Colleniuksen rakentama Uukuniemen tapuli. Hän oli tehnyt samanlaisen myös Kiteelle.

The Ruokolahti church and parsonage, an impressive landmark with wide near and distant views, stand on a hill sloping down to Pappilanlahti, in an open and undeveloped setting that has survived on the edge of the village centre. The wooden church is a cross church with internal splays designed by Chief Intendant E.B. Lohrmann.

The Ruokolahti church is a cross church with internal splays and has a large semicircular central dome that curves at its lower edge. A four-storey tower with a pointed top joins the western arm of the cross. A gallery runs around the nave, and its columns also support the dome. Of the wooden churches designed by Chief Intendant E.B. Lohrmann, the same type as Ruokolahti is represented, among others, by the church of Rääkkylä.

Beside the church is a memorial dedicated to Albert Edelfelt's painting "Ruokolahden eukot Kirkonmäellä".

The bell tower in the middle of the old cemetery, described by Heikki Klemetti as a "takakarpaattinen monstrum", is the oldest example of the East Finnish bell tower type. The outer walls of the octagonal ground floor curve strongly outward towards the top, and the outer corners are through-notched short corners. The forms and structures of the recessed portals and of the doors of the side cupboards have survived. The walls and roof surfaces of the second storey have triangular-motif shingling. The belfry is square, but its tent roof has an octagonal edge profile. Lars Pettersson has observed how the archaic character and sense of mystique of the bell tower are enhanced by its exterior, which has long been maintained with tervasively.

In the old churchyard are the graves of the heroes of the Civil War and the Winter War. The memorial was designed by Ilmari Wirkkala. He also made the memorial to old churches, erected in 1952 in connection with the 200th anniversary celebrations of the bell tower.

The church's immediate surroundings also include a two-storey parish storehouse from 1861. The log-faced building has a strongly moulded, handsome Empire-style cornice. The Ruokolahti house is a reconstruction of a 19th-century farmhouse.

Ruokolahti was separated from the mother parish of Jääski in 1572 as an independent parish. The present church is the parish's third. The previous church dates from 1741.

The church was built to a drawing prepared by Chief Intendant E.B. Lohrmann in 1852, under the direction of master builder Theodor Johan Tolppo, and was completed in 1854.

The bell tower, built under Tuomas Suikkanen, a native of Ruokolahti, was completed in 1752. Its model is said to have been the bell tower of Uukuniemi built by church builder Eskil Collenius. He had also made a similar one for Kitee.
