The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Alueen pohjoispäässä on muita rakennuksia kookkaampi tehtaan johtajan rakennus.

Imatrankosken tuottama vesivoima mahdollisti uusien tehtaiden perustamisen seudulle.

The residential areas of the Kaukopää sulphate cellulose factory, the management residential area of Insinööriniemi and the workers' housing area of Lättälä next to the factory, are among the significant residential environments of the functionalist period.

The residential areas of the Enso-Gutzeit Oy Kaukopää factory date from the founding phase of the factory, 1934-1936. Like the factory buildings, office building, fire station and gatehouse, they were built to the comprehensive plan of architect Väinö Vähäkallio.

The Lättälä area adjoins the factory area directly, but the factory has been largely demolished from the whole. The workers' housing area comprises 20 single-storey and two two-storey two-family houses. The timber-framed houses are rendered in pale colours and have monopitch roofs. In addition to the residential buildings, the area includes outbuildings and service buildings. The area is divided into three parts by streets, and the buildings are loosely grouped on the plots.

On the northern side of the factory, in the area of Insinööriniemi on the wooded shore of Saimaa, there are four two-storey residential houses rendered in pale colours with monopitch roofs. At the northern end of the area stands the factory director's building, which is larger than the other buildings.

Hydropower from the Imatrankoski rapids made it possible to establish new factories in the area. Construction of the Kaukopää factories was already planned in 1932, but the period of hardship delayed the decision. The Enso-Gutzeit cellulose factory started operations at Kaukopää in 1935. Kaukopää was a product of the upswing in the paper industry, and building the factory was one of the largest construction projects in Finland at the time.

Väinö Vähäkallio designed the town plans and buildings for the factory's residential areas, Insinööriniemi and Lättälä. Lättälä was completed in 1936. The construction of Insinööriniemi was not finally completed until the 1950s.

The factory complex at Kaukopää from the 1930s was extended in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of the factory complex was demolished in 2002-2003. Pomolanmäki, the residential area for office staff located north of Lättälä, has also been demolished.
