Kuvaus
Sisustuksen tammenväri on 1860-luvulta, jolloin penkkien ovet poistettiin. Länsilehterin lisäksi kirkossa on lehteri etelälaivan länsipäässä. Kuorin pohjoisosassa on 1695 rakennettu kasteaitaus, keskiaikainen kasteallas on gotlantilaista kalkkikiveä. Alttaritaulu veistoskehystyksineen on vuodelta 1647. "Aateliston kehdoksi" kutsutusta pitäjästä kertoo poikkeuksellisen monilukuinen määrä hautavaakunoita. Kenraaliluutnantti Juhan Gallenin täydellisen sukuvaakunasarjan lisäksi kirkossa on 19 muuta vaakunaa.
Historia
Sauvon seurakunta perustettiin jo ennen 1300-lukua. Pitäjän ensimmäinen, puinen, kirkkorakennus sijaitsi nykyisellä kirkonpaikalla. Kivikirkon sakaristo on runkohuonetta vanhempi ja runkohuone ja holvaus tehtiin samassa rakennusvaiheessa 1400-luvun jälkipuoliskolla. Viimeiseksi rakennettiin asehuone. Kirkon kalkkimaalaukset konservoitiin 1971 ja hautavaakunat 1990-luvulla.

Description
The stone church of Sauvo is the best-preserved medieval church in Finland in terms of its interior and furnishings.
The nave of the church, dedicated to Pyhä Clemens, is three-aisled and six bays long. The high vault is similar to that of churches vaulted under the direction of Petrus Muratori: massive octagonal piers, cross vaults in the side aisles, star vaults in the nave, and two of the easternmost of these are so-called multiform Finnish star vaults. The lime-wash paintings, dating from the beginning of the 1470s, are associated with the school of Pietari Henrikinpoika. On the walls is the so-called credo series, in which paired prophets and apostles present the articles of faith; the choir vault is painted with the Church Fathers and the symbols of the evangelists.
The fixed interior of the nave is exceptionally old and varied. The leaves of the south portal and the sacristy door are medieval. The fronts of the nave pews, the priest's pew and the bishop's chair have been made from medieval wood-carved fronts of the choir gallery and parts of choir chairs. The pew blocks are arranged so that, alongside the central passage, there are also passages in the side aisles. The pews east of the pulpit are so-called double pews. The oak colour of the interior dates from the 1860s, when the doors of the pews were removed. In addition to the west gallery, the church has a gallery at the western end of the south aisle. Both are from the late 17th century, and their railings bear paintings made by Lars Myra in 1695. In the northern part of the chancel is a baptismal enclosure built in 1695; the medieval baptismal font is of Gotlandic limestone. The baroque pulpit with its sounding board was donated to the church in 1651, and its base is the foot of a medieval sacrament house. The altarpiece with its sculpted frame dates from 1647. The unusually large number of tomb coats of arms gives the parish its reputation as a "cradle of the nobility". In addition to the complete set of family coats of arms of Lieutenant General Juhan Gallen, the church has 19 other coats of arms.
The stone lower part of the bell tower is medieval, and the wooden upper part with its onion dome dates from 1770. Its master builder was Anders Wahlberg, who came from Sauvo. Of the brick gateway buildings leading into the churchyard, the western one dates from 1795 and the southern one from the mid-19th century. Near the church are a log loan storehouse from the beginning of the 19th century and a storage granary.
History
Sauvo parish was founded already before the 14th century. The parish's first church, a wooden one, stood on the present church site. The sacristy of the stone church is older than the nave, and the nave and vault were built in the same construction phase in the second half of the 15th century. The armoury was built last. The lime-wash paintings of the church were conserved in 1971, and the tomb coats of arms in the 1990s.
