The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Rautalammin empiretyylinen, Intendentinkonttorin konduktööri C.A. Engelin suunnittelema, puukirkko kuuluu aikansa kookkaimpiin. Kirkko sijaitsee maisemallisesti merkittävällä paikalla, pienellä kumpareella kirkonkylän raitin keskivaiheilla. Keskusraitti on muotoutunut kirkon länsipuolitse kulkeneen vanhan Vaasan ja Kuopion välisen maantien linjaan. Ympäristöä leimaavat kookkaat, satojen vuosien ikäiset männyt.

Pohjakaavaltaan suorakaiteen muotoisessa pitkäkirkossa on lyhyet ristivarret ja niiden edessä ristivarsia kapeammat matalat huonetilat. Lehtereitä kannattavat pilarit jakavat kirkkosalin kolmeen tasalakiseen laivaan. Keskilaiva on kuorin levyinen ja sivulaivoja korkeampi. Kirkon seinät ovat epätavallisen korkeat. Loivan vesikaton keskeltä kohoaa neliskulmainen torni lanterniineineen.

Kirkkoon liittyy raittia rajaava suuri ja lehtevä hautausmaa. Kirkkoa vastapäätä on 1938 valmistunut Rautalammin museon, entisen Peuran museon, rakennus.

Keskusraitin linjaus on säilynyt, mutta sen varrella sijainneista vanhoista rakennuksista on nykyisin vain muutama jäljellä; kauppa ja liiketoimi ovat saaneet uudet rakennuksensa. Raitin valtaväyläluonnetta on korostettu puuriveillä, mikä antaa tielinjalle ominaisleiman.

Puistomaisella Kirkkoharjulla sijaitsevan kirkon lähimaisemaan kuuluu seurakunnan edellisen kirkon yhteyteen 1768 rakennettu pohjalaistyyppinen kellotapuli.

Nykyinen kirkko on seurakunnan kolmas kirkkorakennus. Seurakunnan edellinen, kirkonrakentaja Arvid Junkkarisen johdolla tehty ristikirkko sijaitsi nykyisen kirkon koillispuolella.

Kirkko rakennettiin Intendentinkonttorin konduktööri Carl Alexander Engelin (1818-1843) 1841 laatiman suunnitelman mukaan. Vuonna 1844 valmistuneen kirkon rakennusmestarina toimi Axel Magnus Tolpo. Paanukatto muutettiin peltikatoksi 1854.

The Empire-style wooden church of Rautalampi, designed by conductor C.A. Engel of the Intendentinkonttori, is one of the largest of its time. The church is located in a landscapically significant place, on a small hillock in the middle section of the church village's main street. The central street has taken shape along the line of the old road between Vaasa and Kuopio, which passed west of the church. The surroundings are characterised by large pine trees hundreds of years old.

The long church, rectangular in ground plan, has short transepts, and in front of them low rooms narrower than the transepts. Pillars supporting the galleries divide the nave into three flat-ceilinged naves. The central nave is as wide as the choir and higher than the side naves. The church walls are unusually high. From the middle of the gently sloping roof rises a square tower with its lantern.

The church is associated with a large, leafy cemetery bordering the street. Opposite the church stands the building of the Rautalampi Museum, formerly the Peura Museum, completed in 1938.

The alignment of the central street has survived, but of the old buildings that stood along it only a few remain today; shops and businesses have received new buildings. The main-road character of the street has been emphasised with rows of trees, which gives the road alignment its distinctive character.

The immediate setting of the church, located on the park-like Kirkkoharju, includes the Ostrobothnian-type bell tower built in 1768 in connection with the parish's previous church.

The village street of Rautalampi began to be built up in the early 20th century and had been built up continuously by the 1930s at the latest. The church village street was part of the road between Vaasa and Kuopio, which was built in the late 18th century to connect the administrative towns of the provinces. The street housed trading houses and storehouses, the municipal office and the first banks.

The Rautalampi chapel parish, founded under Sysmä, became independent in 1561. The large parish of Rautalampi covered extensive parts of present-day North Savo and Central Finland. The present church is the parish's third church building. The parish's previous cruciform church, built under the direction of church builder Arvid Junkkari, was located northeast of the present church.

The church was built according to a plan drawn up in 1841 by Carl Alexander Engel (1818-1843), conductor of the Intendentinkonttori. The building master of the church, completed in 1844, was Axel Magnus Tolpo. The shingle roof was changed to a sheet-metal roof in 1854. The church's first major repair was carried out in 1927 according to a plan by architect Kauno S. Kallio, and included, among other things, the renewal of the pews, the moving of the pulpit, and interior and exterior painting. The restoration was carried out in 1974 according to plans by architect Hannele Arantola.
