The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Maalahdenjoen jokisuussa on Åminnen kalasatamassa pitkälti toista sataa etupäässä hirsirakenteista venevajaa ja kalastustarvikelatoa, jotka sijaitsevat pitkinä nauhoina joen molemmilla rannoilla.

Åminnen kalasataman vaja-alue on Pohjanmaan jokisuiden näyttävimpiä.

Åminnen kalasatama on osa valtakunnallisesti arvokasta maisema-aluetta "Övermalax - Åminne".

At the mouth of the Maalahdenjoki, in Åminne fishing harbour, there are well over two hundred boathouses and fishing-gear sheds, mainly log-built, which lie in long strips on both banks of the river.

The boathouse area of Åminne fishing harbour is one of the most striking of the river mouths in Ostrobothnia. In places the boathouses stand in two rows, so that a narrow lane forms between the rows of sheds.

The Åminne fishing harbour is part of the nationally valuable landscape area "Övermalax - Åminne".

Since time immemorial the mouth of the Maalahdenjoki has been common land of the Maalahti villages and has been used as a harbour and storage place for sea fishing.

Fishing, seafaring and shipbuilding were the region's most important livelihoods until the 18th century. The people of Maalahti fished from Storskäret, located on the open sea, and shareholders came from farther afield to the parish's fishing waters for herring fishing. Maalahti was counted among the centres of farmers' sailing; in addition to tar, seal oil and dried fish were shipped to Stockholm, among other goods.

Åminne was also an important harbour towards Vaasa, i.e. fish and agricultural products, among other things, were taken from the area via Åminne to be sold in Vaasa.

In 1970 the Merenkurkku boat museum, maintained by the Maalahti local heritage association (Maalahden kotiseutuyhdistys), was established in the fishing and boat harbour area.
