The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Sunilan tehtaat on vanhin säilynyt sulfaattiselluloosatehdas Suomessa. Sunila asuinalueineen perustuu arkkitehti Alvar Aallon korkeatasoiseen kokonaissuunnitelmaan.

Pyötisen saarella sijaitseva tuotantorakennusten ryhmä on julkisivuiltaan osin puhtaaksi muurattua punatiiltä, osin valkeaksi rapattu.

Julkisivumateriaalina on useimmiten valkoiseksi slammattu punatiili.

Puistolan tehdasvalmisteiset tyyppipientalot sijaitsevat asuinalueen pohjoispäässä. Asuinalueen ulkopuolella on kokoontumis-, urheilu- ja harrastustilana toimiva Sunilan Pirtti, joka periytyy selluloosatehdasta edeltäneeltä sahan ajalta.

Sunila Oy:n perustivat yhteistyönä 1928 puunjalostusteollisuuden suuret toiminimet, joihin kuuluivat kaikki Kymenlaakson suuret metsäteollisuusyhtiöt. Yhtiö hankki omistukseensa Kotkansaarelle 1870-1880-luvulla perustetun sahan, jonka toiminta loppui 1920-luvun lamakauteen.

Osuusliike Liiton 1937 valmistunut kauppa purettiin 2006. Pohjoisemmaksi Sunilantien varteen rakennettiin asuin- ja liikerakennuksia 1940-1960-luvulla. Sunilan kansakoulu valmistui rakennusmestari Vilho Rikan suunnittelemana 1950. Aalto suunnitteli sahan ajoilta periytyvän Sunilan Pirtin eli entisen palokunnantalon sekä virkailijakerhon eli entisen isännöitsijän asunnon korjaukset.

Tehdas päätti luopua asunnoista 1960-luvulla. Sunilan kaupunginosayhdistys Pro Sunila perustettiin 2000 nostamaan ja hoitamaan työväen, asukasmäärän sekä palvelujen vähenemisen vuoksi kuihtuneen asuinalueen arvostusta. Sunila oli mukana 2001-2003 valtakunnallisessa lähiöuudistusohjelmassa.

The Sunila factories are the oldest surviving sulphate pulp mill in Finland. Sunila, with its residential area, is based on architect Alvar Aalto's high-quality overall plan. The town plan for the Sunila residential area, based on the terrain and natural conditions, is the earliest of its kind in the country, and the housing construction in the area has been progressive both in terms of housing and building technology. In designing the Sunila residential area, the key aims were not only to improve the living conditions of the workers but also to soften the social hierarchy traditionally associated with industrial communities. The Sunila factories and residential area have been selected for the international DOCOMOMO organisation's selection of key works of modern architecture.

Sunila, which makes use of the timber procurement area of the Kymijoki water system, is located at the end of the easternmost mouth branch of the Kymijoki. The group of production buildings on Pyötinen island has facades that are partly of exposed red brick laid in plain bond and partly of white-washed render. The reinforced concrete structures are partly left exposed. The factory buildings have been continuously extended, but the additions have been made in a way that adapts them to Aalto's original architecture. The tall chimney and conveyors give the factory area its characteristic appearance. From Aalto's 1930s design, the harbour storehouse and the factory office with its large lobby windows have survived, and from the 1950s extensions, a 70-metre-long lime kiln.

The factory residential area lies on the forested western slope north of the factory. It was built partly according to functionalist design principles and partly based on Alvar Aalto's own ideas. Terraced and apartment blocks are placed loosely on the pine-forested slope, following the terrain in a fan-like arrangement. Aalto designed the town plan for the residential area and the residential buildings for engineers, office staff and workers, which were, on completion, of very high standard in terms of living comfort and fittings. The floor plans of the flats were, in their time, very modern, with rooms separated for different functions and fixed furniture. The buildings in the residential area made use of the possibilities offered by reinforced concrete in their dimensioning and in arrangements such as stairwells and ventilated balconies.

In the residential area, the traditional hierarchy associated with the design of factory communities has given way: the flats for office staff and workers are placed in the same area, and different types of residential houses are harmonised so that only the size of the flat indicates the residents' position in the company. The facade material is most often red brick white-washed.

The factory-made standard detached houses of Puistola are located at the northern end of the residential area. Outside the residential area is Sunila Pirtti, which serves as a meeting, sports and hobby venue and dates from the sawmill era preceding the cellulose factory.

Sunila Oy was founded in 1928 through cooperation between the major wood-processing trading firms, which included all the major forest industry companies of Kymenlaakso. The company acquired a sawmill established on Kotkansaari in the 1870s and 1880s, whose operations ended during the recession of the 1920s. The land and water areas of the former sawmill were utilised by establishing a sulphate pulp mill at Sunila on Pyötinen island in 1936. The sulphate method, which made it possible also to use sawmill waste wood, became more widespread in pulp production, especially from the 1930s onwards.

On the proposal of Harry Gullichsen, director of A. Ahlström Oy, architect Alvar Aalto was hired to design the Sunila pulp mill and its staff residential area. Aalto designed the Sunila factory buildings and the town plan and residential buildings of the housing area. Sunila was built mainly in 1936-1938, and the factory started operations in 1938. A road with bridges and a harbour were also built for the industrial plant. The railway from Karhula to the harbour was completed in 1937. The factory has been continuously extended during its operation: Aalto was involved as designer in the 1950s extension phases of the factory.

The first buildings of the Sunila residential area completed in 1937 were the managing director's house Kantola, the terraced houses Rantala and Mäkelä for leading officials and foremen, a number of service and auxiliary buildings, and the small apartment blocks Mäntylä and Honkala for workers.

In 1938, Etelä-Kymin Asuntorakennus Oy (EKA), a joint housing company of Sunila Oy and two other industrial plants then operating in Kymi municipality, was established. The following year, five terraced and apartment blocks of EKA were completed in Sunila, together with a heating centre, and 12 factory-made detached houses. Further residential buildings were completed in 1945-1947 and in 1953. The residential apartment blocks Juurela and Runkola, designed by architect Keijo Strömi, were the last residential buildings built by the company.

Services and auxiliary facilities were also built in the area, such as a sauna and laundry building and garages. The shop of Osuusliike Liitto, completed in 1937, was demolished in 2006. Further north, along Sunilantie, residential and commercial buildings were built in the 1940s-1960s. Sunila folk school, designed by master builder Vilho Rika, was completed in 1950. Aalto designed the repairs of Sunila Pirtti, which dates from the sawmill era and was formerly the fire brigade house, as well as of the officials' club, i.e. the former estate manager's residence.

The company decided to dispose of the flats in the 1960s. The Sunila district association Pro Sunila was founded in 2000 to raise and maintain the appreciation of the residential area, which had declined due to the decrease in workers, residents and services. Sunila took part in the national suburban renewal programme in 2001-2003.
