The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Väisälänmäki lukeutuu Pohjois-Savon edustavimpiin mäkikylämaisemiin. Kylän vanha, hyvin säilynyt rakennuskanta on tiiviinä rykelmänä korkean mäen eteläisillä ja lounaisilla ylärinteillä. Rannan Puurulan rakennusryhmä muodostaa oman kokonaisuutensa Onkiveden rannassa.

Rannan-Puurulasta tuli Puurusten suvun kantatila 1709. Peltoalaa lisättiin kaskeamalla. Väisälänmäen laella olevat pellot olivat käytössä jo 1700-luvun lopulla, ja rakennuskanta on valtaosaltaan 1800-luvulta.

Väisälänmäkeä ikuistaneita taiteilijoita ovat Pekka Halonen ja Eero Järnefelt. Järnefelt vietti kesän 1893 Rannan-Puurulan talossa maalaten tunnetut teokset "Raatajat rahanalaiset" eli "Kaski" sekä "Isäntä ja rengit".

Väisälänmäki is one of the most representative hill-village landscapes in North Savo. The village's old, well-preserved building stock forms a compact cluster on the southern and south-western upper slopes of the high hill. The Rannan Puurula building group forms its own entity on the shore of Onkivesi.

The buildings of Väisälänmäki are surrounded by small-scale fields, slope pastures and hakamaat. Besides Rannan Puurula, the traditional farm groups of Väisälänmäki are Ala-Puurula, Ylä-Puurula, also known as Väisälä, and Roivaala.

Väisälänmäki has been classified as a national landscape and as a valuable landscape area in the report of the Ministry of the Environment's landscape area working group.

Väisälänmäki was one of the outlying areas of the large parish of Tavinsalmi. The first known inhabitant, Pekka Martikainen, was among those taxed in 1548. The village of Väisälänmäki was mentioned in a tax register in 1664, when it had three farms, all of them owned by men named Väisänen. Later the village was settled by the Jääskeläinen, Roivainen and Puurunen families. Rannan-Puurula became the founding farm of the Puurunen family in 1709. Field area was increased by slash-and-burn clearing. The fields on the top of Väisälänmäki were already in use at the end of the 18th century, and most of the building stock dates from the 19th century.

Artists who immortalised Väisälänmäki include Pekka Halonen and Eero Järnefelt. Järnefelt spent the summer of 1893 at the Rannan-Puurula farm, painting the well-known works "Raatajat rahanalaiset", also known as "Kaski", and "Isäntä ja rengit".
