Claremont
Four miles north. The village of the Quioughcohanock Indians nearby was first visited by English settlers in May, 1607. The estate was patented in 1649; the house was built some years later by Arthur Allen, rumored to be a prince. There is an underground passage to the river. A place of great romantic interest. Railroad iron from there was used to armor the Confederate battleship "Merrimac".
