Battle of Great Bridge
A short distance east was a stockade fort built by the British to command a causeway and bridges over the swamp. Lord Dunmore, the royal governor, held this fort with a force of British regulars, tories and Negroes. On December 9, 1775, the regulars, led by Captain Fordyce, tried to cross the causeway to attack the Americans. Most of the British were killed or wounded, and Dunmore withdrew to his fleet.
