Governor Joseph Maull
Born in Lewes in 1781, Joseph Maull would become a physician and move to Milton by 1803. Appointed to serve as Sussex County Trustee of the Poor in 1810, he would join the State Militia during the War of 1812 and help defend Lewes during the British bombardment in 1813. Active in the business affairs of Milton, he influenced the construction of the milldam which formed present-day Wagamons Pond. A member of the Whig party, he was elected to the State Senate in 1816 and selected to lead as Speaker in 1845. He became Governor in 1846 and two months later, died suddenly at his home in Milton. He was laid to rest in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes.
