Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of two round barrows, burial mounds probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC) and situated on the summit of the SW-facing ridge of Crugyn Llwyd. The northernmost barrow (Item A: SO 0169 7829) measures about 18.5m in diameter and up to 1m in height. It has a grass-covered level surface and is apparently undisturbed. The southernmost barrow (Item B: SO 0169 7826) measures about 22m in diameter and up to 0.7m in height. It was probably originally very similar to its neighbour, but has been modified to create a substantial beacon. Both the E and W sides of the barrow have been quarried in order to raise the height of the central mound (which now stands up to 2.5m in height).

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits and environmental and structural evidence, including buried prehistoric land surfaces.

The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is rectangular and measures 56m from N to S by 36m transversely.
