Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument consists of the remains of a longhouse, a barn or dwelling under one roof, probably dating to the medieval or post-medieval period. The longhouse is of stone construction and measures 16m x 5.5m and had three compartments, two of which had fireplaces utilising a shared chimney. There are also three earth house platforms and two platform houses with associated enclosures. The simple earth built house platforms measure between 12 and 16m in length by 9m wide and probably represent the earliest visible form of domestic occupation at the site. These were probably replaced by the two platform houses or hafods, both of which are associated with small banked enclosures. These, along with the longhouse are all set within a large earth and rubble banked enclosure.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval or post-medieval settlement organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A longhouse may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
