Cadw's description

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of an extensive barrow cemetery, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC) and situated within open moorland and enclosed pasture on Cae-glas Hill. The barrow cemetery comprises at least 5 grass and heather-covered barrows. The barrows range in size from 9.5m to 11m in diameter and stand up to 1.1m in height.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual. The monument is an important and unusual relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits and environmental and structural evidence, including buried prehistoric land surfaces.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. They are circular and measure 22m in diameter and have been inventoried as follows: Area A (centred upon Item A, SO 1388 7802); Area B (centred upon Item B, SO 1394 7793); Area C (centred upon Item C, SO 1393 7803); Area D (centred upon Item D, SO 1400 7797); and Area E (centred upon Item E, SO 1402 7791).
