Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork enclosure. The date or precise nature of the enclosure is uncertain, but it is likely to be Roman, medieval or even post-medieval. The site, which is also known as Little Mountain Enclosure, is sub-rectangular in plan, with rounded corners, and measures c.84m north-west to south-east by c.66m overall. It is defined by two banks with a ditch between them, with a simple entrance gap and causeway c.6.5m wide midway along the north-east side. The banks stand c.0.6m and c.0.8m above the interior and exterior respectively, and c.1.0m above the base of the intervening ditch. The site lies close to a trackway which has been claimed as Roman, though there is no convincing evidence for this.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of defensive organisation and settlement within the wider context of the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
