Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises a small defended enclosure or rath, which probably dates to the Iron Age period (800 BC - 43 AD). Usually enclosed by a bank and ditch, raths often contain evidence of intensive occupation. It is situated on the south side of a low hill close to its summit and consists of a two banks and a separating ditch that enclose a circular area some 60m in diameter. The internal bank measures 0.3m to 0.6m above the interior and 0.6m to 1.0m above the broad and shallow ditch. The outer bank is 0.3m to 0.6m above the exterior where shallow indications of an external ditch suggest use as a second rampart rather than a counterscarp. The outer bank has a later boundary bank running along it and is also interrupted by Park House on the north side. The rath has a simple entrance on the south.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Iron Age settlement and social organisation. The monument forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric landscape. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
