Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the earthwork remains of a castle; a ringwork or motte, which dates to the medieval period (c. AD 1066 - 1485). Set on low-lying and damp ground, it comprises a roughly D-shaped and flat-topped earthwork that rises about 2.6m high and has a summit area of about 36m north-east to south-west by 26m. This has a bank on all sides except the north east and the west; a stream passing along the west side and the otherwise generally marshy ground may have afforded sufficient protection. The bank survives to a height of between 1 and 1.7m high. The south-east side & eastern angle have an external ditch crossed by a causewayed entrance c 2m wide.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
