Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a church, probably dating to the medieval period. The church is roofless and crumbling and consists of a tiny medieval nave 13’ x 10’6" and an added chancel 18’4" x 14’ (all measurements internal). The chancel arch is 15th or early 16th century and the whole east end appears of this date. The nave is earlier with no datable features, but probably 12th century. The chancel arch has dropped and is only held up by ivy.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval ecclesiastical organisation. The monument forms an important element within the wider medieval context and the structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
