Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a free standing cross probably dating to the early medieval or medieval period now located in the south transept of Penally Church. The wheel headed cross was sculpted from a single piece of stone and is approximately 1.4m in height. The wheel head has widely splayed curving arms and a slightly splayed shaft with a stepped base. Both head and shaft are edged with cable mouldings at the angles. The head is patterned in the same way on the back and front and has a pronounced central boss decorated with a four lobbed knot and six cord ring-twists on the arms. The shaft is also decorated with knot and plaitwork.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. A cross may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described.
