Summary description and reason for designation
he following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork/stone-built enclosure, the date or precise nature of which is unknown, together with a standing stone; both of which are likely to be prehistoric in date. The enclosure forms a low bank c 28m in diameter, c 1m in width and 0.4 high, whilst the standing stone, which lies immediately to the north east, measures 2.7m high and is c 0.7m square at the base, tapering to a rounded tip. Excavation of the standing stone indicated it had been one of a pair, 10m apart, with a stony area, c.15m by 15m containing a Bronze Age cremation, extending to the north. Underneath this horizon, a cluster of seven subcircular and rectangular structures were also identified.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement, burial and ritual practices. The site forms an important element within the wider prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
