Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a fishpond, used for the rearing, breeding, sorting and storing of fish, dating to the medieval or post-medieval period. The site comprises a series of low banks and ditches enclosing three sides of a rectangular area that is bounded to the N by a small stream. The site was originally thought to be the remains of a moated manor, however excavations have revealed that the ditches and the substantial inner bank were designed to contain water and that the site was used as a large fish pond.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval or post-medieval maritime agricultural practices. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
