Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general summary of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead. It consists of a roughly rectangular level platform, measuring 24m NE/SW by 34m NW/SE, surrounded by a ditch. On the SE side the ditch is flat-bottomed, around 1m deep, with an external bank. The bank is 1.3m high on the outside and 0.5m high on the inside. Along the NE side there is a drop of around 0.7m to a shallow ditch, although there is no external bank. On the SW and NW sides there is no identifiable ditch although the ground does drop away sharply. The moated site is thought to be the location of the original medieval manor built by the Deneford family, the 13th century Lords of Crick.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
