Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises a small standing stone, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC) and situated within enclosed moorland on a gentle W-facing slope below and c.150m to the SW of the prominent round barrow of Pen y Groes Isaf (MG289). The standing stone measures 0.6m in height, 0.7m in thickness from NNE to SSW by 0.3m in width.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. Although small and unobtrusive, the stone is undoubtedly associated with the nearby barrow and (with nearby boggy ground and peat growth) has good associated palaeoenvironmental potential. Its position within the extensive surviving Bronze Age ritual landscape contained within this upland plateau - including several round barrows, a small cairn cemetery, stone alignments and a stone circle - further increases its importance.

The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 10m in diameter.
