Summary description and reason for designation
The monument consists of the remains of a cross-dyke, a defensive boundary or earthwork, dating to the later prehistoric/early medieval period. The probable course of the Wantyn Dyke runs for approximately 3km from SO 18299211 in the NW to SO 19668957 in the SE. It consists of a bank with a ditch on the western side. The entire length is in variable condition, owing to centuries of degradation from the plough. Three sections are included under this scheduling.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric/medieval defensive organisation and settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A dyke may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
