Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the scheduled monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a well preserved castle-ringwork, which dates to the medieval period (c. AD 1066 - 1485). The remains consist of a small, sub-circular, strongly defended earthwork situated on natural mound at end of prominent spur. The external measurements are 90.0m diameter NE-SW x 80m transversely. The internal measurements are 35m NE-SW x 45m transversely. The defences consist of a rampart and ditch measuring up to 4m high from top of bank to the bottom of the 1.2m deep ditch. The rampart is not apparent in NE quadrant. The ditch appears to have been widened erratically. There is a causewayed entrance and natural ramp.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement, organisation and defence. The site forms an important element within the wider medieval landscape. It is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, layout, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
