Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of earthen built round barrows, which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The barrows are circular in shape on plan, and have a rounded profile. Pegwn Mawr comprises 2 turf-covered stone barrows situated on summit of Pegwn mawr on rough grassland. Barrow A has a diameter c. 19.0m and max. height 2m. Stones from the barrow have been used to construct a sheep shelter at the centre. This measures approx. 6m x 3m. A post has been erected on top. Barrow B lies 18.0m to SW of A, and consists of a ring cairn with internal diameter of c.10m. The surrounding bank varies in width between 2m on SW to 4m on NW. An O.S. triangulation pillar stands upon bank on SW. side. Externally bank measures 0.6m on SW to 0.9m on NW and c. 0.2m internally.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. Barrows may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
