Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument consists of the well preserved remains of 16 stone buildings, of varying forms, which are spread across an east-facing slope overlooking the Afon Goch. There are at least three types of buildings present, including three examples of long multi-compartment buildings or longhouses, eleven compact rectangular long huts with one or two internal compartments, and two later buildings, probably 19th century hafotai. All of the buildings have individual interest but, combined, they present a well-preserved fragment of historic landscape spanning many centuries of time, with the earliest potentially dating from the medieval period. They demonstrate a changing pattern of occupation and land use.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval or post-medieval settlement organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The importance of the buildings is further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
