Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains a hut circle 6m in diameter, with walls 1.5m thick, and an oval hut 4m long, linked and partly enclosed by stone walled enclosures. The complex probably dates to the Bronze Age or Iron Age (c.2300 BC - AD 74), though the two huts appear very different and excavation has suggested that the oval one was built later than the round one. A further, less well-preserved hut circle lay to the east of the nearby stream but has not been included in the scheduled area. The site sits on a shelf in a north-west facing slope overlooking an ancient routeway through the Meirionnydd hills, and is among a number of sites in the local area which represent the ritual and settlement landscape along this routeway.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric domestic life, agricultural practices and social organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of structural evidence and associated archaeological features and deposits.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is a rectangle measuring 65m east-west by 45m.
