Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
A stone road bridge spanning the Afon Mawddach 1km SE of Llanelltyd; originally serving the old Dolgellau-Barmouth road and now a foot bridge. It probably dates to the late 17th or 18th century.
The bridge has five three-centred arches spanning some 70m. The width between the parapets is 4.25m. There are four triangular piers on each side finished to a point without recesses, one between each pair of arches. The bridge also has simple, square flood openings built in 'clapper' style.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of post-medieval transport and construction. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
