Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a Romano-British enclosure, probably dating from the late Iron Age and Romano-British periods (c. 100BC - AD 410). The embanked enclosure is roughly circular on plan and is situated on the upper leading edge of the east-facing slope forming the west side of the Green Cwm. The recovery of a large assemblage of Roman finds (including pottery, tile, painted wallplaster and a tessera or mosaic tile) indicates high-status occupation of the enclosure during the Roman period. The monument is situated within woodland and measures about 44m in diameter over a substantial spread rubble bank about 5m in thickness and up to 0.7m in height.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Romano-British rural settlement and social organisation. The monument forms an important element within the wider context of Romano-British society in Wales and the structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail. The importance of the site is further enhanced by its demonstrable potential to contain a varied finds assemblage of considerable interest and importance - finds that have also been collected from an area extending 50m to the south.

The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
