Cadw's description

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument consists of the multi-period remains of a large number of archaeological sites. The vast sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr cover a variety of archaeological sites which range from prehistoric funerary, ritual and domestic remains through to medieval/post-medieval deserted settlement.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric funerary and ritual sites and medieval/post-medieval settlement and organization. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. These sites form part of a cluster of monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them which related evidence may be expected to survive.
