Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a D-shaped earthwork enclosure probably dating to the later prehistoric period (c. 800BC - AD74). The earthwork is much disturbed, however, survives on the west and south showing as a curving bank 8m wide by 1.5m high. It is fronted by a ditch 8m deep by 1.2m deep. The flat eastern side of the site has been destroyed by a later quarry pit.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of defensive, agricultural or settlement organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
