Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a blast furnace dating to the industrial period. The iron furnace was built about 1827 and only functioned for a fairly brief time. It consists of a rear wall approximately 3m high built in rough stone. Excavation in the 1970s discovered the site of the hearth and bellows implacements. The site is made up of bricks which are stamped and show that they came from Stourbridge, although they were also handstamped in Rudry. To the south-west of the furnace are the remains of two loading platforms.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance and illustrate our knowledge and understanding of the development of the iron industry. An ironworks may be part of a larger industrial complex and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
