Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises of 41 stepping stones, which provide pedestrian access across the River Ewenny. The stepping stones link Ogmore Castle on the south bank to the flood plain between the Rivers Ewenny and Ogmore to the north. The alignment has been deliberately located where the river is wider, shallower and slower flowing. The north-south alignment of stones measures c. 35m in length and is complete. The structure is probably medieval in date with later revisions.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of early transport systems. The monument is well preserved and a rare survival. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The monument's significance is further enhanced by its proximity to Ogmore Castle.

The area to be scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
