Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a burial cairn, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC). It is situated in enclosed rough pasture on a slight terrace on the S-facing slopes of Moel Seisiog. The stone-built cairn is roughly circular in shape on plan and measures 5m in diameter and 0.4m in height. It features an exposed cist that is aligned NW-SE and measures 0.7m in length and 0.4m in width. The displaced capstone, which measures 1.2m in length and 0.7m in width, is located immediately to the SE. A kerb of edge-set stones on all but the N side defines the edge of the cairn. Although the cairn has been disturbed in the past, the majority of the cairn's features appear to remain intact and much of the lower cairn mass is undisturbed.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both structural evidence and intact burial or ritual deposits.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 20m in diameter.
