Summary description and reason for designation
The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead, measuring 42m x 44m from outer bank to outer bank, and 30m x 30m in the interior. The interior is level without obvious surface features. The moat is approximately 8m wide and marshy or water-filled. There is a slight outer bank on all sides around the site except in the south, where an entrance may have been located, and in the east, just south of the eastern corner, where possibly a stream led in to feed the moat.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
