Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of three round barrows, burial mounds probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC), and situated on the summit and eastern slopes of Vivod Mountain. Barrow A is located on the summit of the mountain, and stands up to 1.5m high. Barrow B stands c.1m high and has a diameter of 20m. It is situated on a low saddle at the head of two streams, to the east-north-east of Barrow A. Barrow C is situated in sloping pasture to the east-north-east of Barrow B. It stands c.1.2m high and has a diameter of c.15m.
The monuments are of national importance for their potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The well-preserved monuments are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits and environmental and structural evidence, including buried prehistoric land surfaces.
